AUDITIONS

We hold auditions at the start of fall and occasionally winter semesters. We welcome anyone that's interested in joining our Sop family!

Below is a run-down on what to expect at your audition, and some FAQs.

1. Vocal Range

We'll start by warming you up with some ascending and descending scales, to get a sense of your vocal range. You can sing them on any syllable that you'd like, and we'll guide you on the piano.

2. Tonal Memory

Next, we'll test your tonal memory by playing a series of notes on the piano, and having you sing the sequence back to us.

3. Sight Reading

We'll give you a short piece of sheet music to sight read, and provide your starting note. You can sing this on any syllable you'd like.

4. Solo

Finally, you'll sing a short solo (a verse and chorus) that best highlights your vocal range and style.

Please refrain from singing a classical, choral or musical theater song.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if I have no prior musical background?
No worries! We still encourage you to audition and give it your best shot. We want to hear your unique voice, and do not expect perfection.

2. What if I don't know how to sight read?
We were in your shoes once, and know that sight reading can be daunting. We're not looking for perfection. This part of the audition helps us see where you're at, so we can provide the best guidance for you.

3. What type of song should I sing for my solo?
Prepare a verse and chorus of a song that shows off your vocal range, style and personality as a singer – we want to see you in your element! Please do not prepare a classical, choral or musical theater selection. We also welcome vocal percussion!

4. Can I look at lyrics during my solo, or sing with a backtrack?
You can look at lyrics for your solo if need be! We can also give you your starting note if you'd like. However, you cannot sing with a backtrack.

5. If I identify as non-binary, can I audition for the Sopranos?
Absolutely!

6. Can you provide any information on audition logistics?
Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your audition slot. If you aren't called in early, you're welcome to use this time to warm up.  Don't worry if you didn't sign up for a slot; walk-ins are welcome!
If you receive a callback after auditions, we'll let you know via email and/or text. Be sure to check your junk folder too, just in case!

7. Still have questions?
